Weather forecasts often include technical terms that can be confusing. Understanding them helps you make better outdoor decisions.

Heat Index

How hot it feels when humidity is combined with air temperature.

A comprehensive measurement of heat stress that includes temperature, humidity, sunlight, and wind.

The temperature at which moisture condenses. Higher dew points indicate more moisture in the air and often make conditions feel more uncomfortable.

The amount of moisture currently in the air compared to the maximum amount the air can hold at that temperature.

Conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms.

A severe thunderstorm is occurring or expected soon. Take protective action immediately.

Conditions are favorable for tornado development.

A tornado has been detected or indicated by radar. Seek shelter immediately.
